The Challenge

A state-level intelligence and coordination center needed a comprehensive Disaster Recovery (DR) site to ensure mission-critical systems remained operational during outages. The solution had to support full failover, align with federal security standards, and seamlessly integrate with multiple vendors and state network infrastructure — all while accommodating evolving security, replication, and application requirements.

The ATS Solution

ATS designed, engineered, and managed a multi-site DR implementation using Dell, VMware, and Fortinet technologies — tightly integrated across both the production data center and a secure colocation facility. Key highlights:

  • Delivered a mirrored, high-availability architecture using VXRAIL P-series, Isilon, PowerSwitch, and Fortinet 600F firewalls.

  • Designed custom VLANs and configured advanced spine-leaf switching, enabling secure, segmented traffic flow across environments.

  • Integrated Superna Eyeglass and RP4VM to manage DR replication with aggressive recovery targets (RTO: 2 hours, RPO: 15 mins).

  • Managed all hardware procurement, firmware updates, installation, and cross-team coordination (MCAC, Network Maryland, Tierpoint, Dell, VMware, Fortinet).

  • Developed tailored configurations to meet security requirements for DMZ access, data integrity, and failover strategies.

The Results

This project exemplified complex, multi-stakeholder coordination with precision execution:
