Focus: Infrastructure Modernization & Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

The Challenge

A public research university sought to modernize its IT environment to better support remote learning, on-campus computing, and disaster recovery. Their existing infrastructure lacked the scalability and performance needed for a growing student body and new distance-learning programs. The university needed to deliver consistent access to applications for thousands of users — including both standard users and those requiring high-performance graphics — across any device and location.

The ATS Solution

ATS delivered a full-stack VDI and infrastructure modernization program designed around growth, resiliency, and student accessibility. Working closely with the university and key partners, ATS:

  • Designed a future-ready infrastructure architecture using Dell VxRail, VMware Horizon, and NVIDIA GRID.

  • Built a dual-site datacenter approach to support both production workloads and disaster recovery.

  • Deployed over 30 high-performance nodes and multi-tier storage to support up to 2,800 VDI users.

  • Integrated graphic-intensive virtual desktops for up to 500 users using NVIDIA vGPU technology.

  • Provided project management from requirements gathering through implementation, coordinating all technical partners.

  • Adapted to evolving scope needs — including changes in disaster recovery site location and infrastructure rack compatibility.

The Results

ATS successfully delivered on the university’s modernization and resiliency goals:

  • ✅ 100% Schedule Adherence – Delivered prior to Fall 2024 despite internal power and network modernization delays.

  • ✅ Seamless DR Integration – DR site implementation aligned with university system requirements.

  • ✅ Flexible, Scalable Platform – Supports academic computing, remote instruction, and future IT service expansion.

  • ✅ Client Satisfaction – University leadership rated the engagement 100% across project success factors.
